There is so much happening across Glasgow and the West of Scotland and our news portal will allow us to share it with you.

Scots students victorious in Russia

Two Scottish college students have claimed medallions of excellence at the world’s biggest skills competition WorldSkills Kazan 2019.

Mark Scott, from City of Glasgow College and Callum Bonnar from Forth Valley College won their prestigious prizes in the Wall and Floor Tiling and Painting and Decorating categories.

They received their medallions - given to competitors who have achieved the international standard in their skill - at a spectacular closing ceremony in Kazan, Russia at which Russian president Vladimir Putin made a speech.

Both students were part of 37 strong Team UK made up of students, apprentices and trainees who bring home an impressive medal haul of two gold, one silver, one bronze, as well as 15 medallions of excellence.

Paul Little, City of Glasgow College principal and chief executive, and WorldSkills Scotland lead ambassador, said: “Congratulations to Mark and Callum and of course to all Team UK medalists. This is a life changing experience and we are so very proud that their hard work and commitment has paid off.

“WorldSkills competitions provide a very visible global platform to show the expert level our students reach. What better way also to highlight to a worldwide audience the work of colleges in delivering world-class education, skills training and development."

Known as the Olympic Games of Skills, WorldSkills Kazan 2019 was the 45th in the event’s history and brought together 1,345 young professionals from 63 countries to compete in 56 different disciplines.

City of Glasgow College is the current number one college in the UK for WorldSkills.
