Strathclyde centre wins conference venue award

The University of Strathclyde’s Technology and Innovation Centre has won an award in a UK-wide programme for the events industry.

The centre won the gold award for Best Academic Venue in the M&IT Industry Awards, presented by Meetings & Incentive Travel Magazine.

Since opening as a conference venue in 2015, the centre has hosted more than 1,500 conferences and meeting on a broad range of academic and business subjects, as well as political events, sports conferences and risk management summits. It was also a venue for BBC One’s Question Time in 2017.

The centre was voted top venue in the category by events organisers from around the UK. The result was announced at an event in London’s Battersea Evolution.

Gordon Hodge, Head of Conferencing and Events at Strathclyde, said: “We’re delighted to have won such a prestigious award after just three years of operation. Best of all, it’s thanks to votes from our loyal and growing client base, which is testimony to the power of putting your customer at the heart of everything you do.

“The Technology and Innovation Centre has challenged traditional perceptions of an academic venue, and allows Strathclyde to host regional, national and international meetings on campus – indeed, many now experience Strathclyde for the first time as a conference delegate.

“Our vision is to provide a world-class venue which is a platform for knowledge exchange, where Strathclyde academics showcase their research activity and their partnerships with industry and the public sector. Together, we are delivering economic and reputational benefit to the University and to the city of Glasgow.”

The £89 million Technology and Innovation Centre was officially opened by HM The Queen in 2015. Its conference facilities include a 450-seat auditorium, ten seminar and breakout rooms and a further tiered auditorium seating 150, plus flexible foyer space perfect for exhibitions and networking.

As an academic research base, The Technology and Innovation Centre is a beacon for innovation, attracting innovative global businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises to Glasgow. It houses shared and flexible facilities, where world-class researchers work side-by-side with industrial partners.

The award was part of a highly successful ceremony for Glasgow. The city’s Convention Bureau won the Best UK Convention Bureau award, for a record-breaking 12th consecutive year, and the Scottish Event Campus, formerly the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre, received Silver in the Best UK Conference Centre category.
